Lot description:
Roman Provincial

IONIA, Ephesus. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ (37mm, 24.30 g, 6h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. BMC 224; SNG Copenhagen 387 (same obv. die); SNG von Aulock -. Good Fine, dark greenish-brown patina, cleaning scratches. Slight traces of silvering on the reverse.

From the R. D. Frederick Collection.

The light silvering on this specimen and a specimen that appeared in Stack’s (11 January 2010, lot 267), suggests that this was perhaps a medallic or commemorative issue, possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos in AD 129

Estimate: $200
